PORTMARNOCK GOLF CLUB
🇮🇪 Portmarnock, Dublin, IE
Designed by Tom Watson

Portmarnock Golf Club's Championship Course occupies a sandy peninsula north of Dublin, stretching along the Irish Sea between the estuary and Velvet Strand beach. The original links was laid out in 1894 by W.C. Pickeman and George Ross, with significant revisions by Fred Hawtree and others through the mid-20th century. Tom Watson contributed design consultation and modifications in recent decades, refining bunkering and green complexes while respecting the classic linksland routing that has defined the course for over a century.
The layout runs out and back along the peninsula in a traditional links pattern, with the opening holes playing inland before the course turns seaward. The terrain features rolling duneland, natural sandy waste areas, and firm turf that produces the ground game characteristic of Irish links golf. Prevailing winds from the Irish Sea shift direction and intensity, altering the challenge from round to round. The closing stretch returns toward the clubhouse with several demanding holes played against the coastal backdrop.
Portmarnock has hosted numerous significant championships, including the Canada Cup (now World Cup), multiple Irish Opens on the European Tour, and several Walker Cup matches. The course has appeared regularly in international rankings and remains a fixture in discussions of Ireland's premier links layouts. The club maintains a traditional members' culture, and the course is known among visitors for its pure links character and the strategic demands placed on shot-making in coastal wind conditions.
Reviews
A biased member but this course is a truly great championship course and it’s 3rd nine is also superb.
Oisin the caddie was awesome. Favorite course ever played
My trip started on a bluebird day here, was relatively calm, played decent but watch out for #9 and #17
First links I ever played. Everyone remembers their first
