MCCALL LAKE GOLF COURSE
🇨🇦 Calgary, Alberta, CA
Designed by Bill Newis

McCall Lake Golf Course occupies a scenic site in the northeast quadrant of Calgary, where the Championship layout was designed by Bill Newis and opened in the late 1990s. The course takes its name from the small lake that figures prominently in the routing, with water coming into play on several holes and providing both strategic challenge and visual definition to the property. The design reflects the parkland character typical of Calgary's municipal and public courses, with mature stands of trees, modest elevation changes, and a prairie landscape backdrop that opens to views of the distant Rocky Mountain foothills on clear days.
The Championship course at McCall Lake serves a broad public golf audience in Calgary's growing northeastern communities. Newis routed the eighteen holes to incorporate natural water features and tree-lined corridors, creating variety in hole character and shot requirements. The layout includes a mix of risk-reward opportunities around the lake edges and straightforward parkland holes that reward accuracy and course management. Conditioning and playability are maintained to accommodate daily-fee traffic, and the course remains a practical option for Calgary golfers seeking accessible championship-length golf without the premium pricing of private or resort facilities.
McCall Lake functions as part of Calgary's network of public courses, offering a familiar Canadian parkland experience with water hazards as the primary design accent. The facility supports year-round operations within the constraints of Alberta's climate, typically opening in April and closing in October.
Reviews
City course, tough to get a better value around town. Nothing special from an architectural perspective, the “lake” in the middle of the course does seem to make an inviting home to bugs so bring your spray. Nice for Avgeeks as borders the airport and planes will be on final approach right over the course.
