COCO BEACH GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB
🇵🇷 Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, PR
Designed by Tom Kite

Coco Beach Golf & Country Club echoes with the triumphs and trials of PGA TOUR titans. Located along the northeastern coast of Puerto Rico where the trade winds buffet the fairways, this championship layout, originally designed by Bruce Besse Jr., presents a compelling challenge. Broad fairways invite aggressive play, while strategically placed bunkers and ever-present coastal breezes penalize wayward shots. Subtle doglegs and deceptive green complexes reward strategic thinking over brute force.
While untouched by major championship play, Coco Beach hosted the Puerto Rico Open from 2008 until 2023. This event offered a crucial opportunity for players vying for TOUR status, contributing to the lore of the course as a proving ground. Robert Gamez's 2015 victory at Coco Beach, his first TOUR win in 15 years, stands as a particularly poignant moment, illustrating the course's capacity for both redemption and surprise.
Known locally for its relaxed atmosphere and welcoming membership, Coco Beach remains a popular destination for golfers seeking a rewarding test in a picturesque setting. The clubhouse buzzes with tales from the links and the aroma of local flavors, creating an authentic Puerto Rican golfing experience, while the call of the coqui frogs can be heard along the fairways after sunset.
Reviews
Grand Reserve was a fun one, but honestly not a course that’s going to stick with me. It’s wide open, easy to navigate off the tee, and there are a few cool holes mixed in — just nothing that really punches you in the face as a “must-remember” moment. For a PGA TOUR stop, it just doesn’t play like one. Conditions were solid but leaned a little long across the board. Fairways, greens, tee boxes — all just a touch shaggy. Still totally playable, just not super dialed. The bunkers, though, were a surprise highlight. Fantastic sand. Super consistent, soft, and honestly some of the best we played in Puerto Rico. The facilities are great, the range is strong, and the whole place has a good vibe. It’s definitely worth a round if you’re already on the island, but the price feels a little high for what the course actually delivers. Fun day overall — just not one I’d rush back to.
