Champion/Tradition at Firewheel Golf Club

Firewheel Golf Club's Champion and Tradition courses occupy a municipal facility in Garland, a suburb northeast of Dallas. Dick Phelps designed both layouts, which opened in the early 1980s as part of a city-owned complex that has served as an accessible public golf option in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex for over four decades.

The Champion course represents the more demanding test of the two, routed across rolling terrain with mature tree corridors and water hazards that come into play on several holes. The layout incorporates elevation changes uncommon for North Texas municipal golf, with fairways that move through stands of oak and pecan trees. Strategic bunkering and green complexes require thoughtful course management, particularly on the longer par fours and the closing stretch of holes.

The Tradition course offers a somewhat gentler companion layout, though it shares similar terrain characteristics and tree-lined playing corridors. Both courses benefit from the property's natural topography, which provides more movement and visual interest than the flatter landscapes typical of many Dallas-area courses. The facility has undergone periodic updates to maintain playing conditions and modernize infrastructure while preserving Phelps's original design concepts.

Firewheel serves a broad public golf audience, from daily-fee players to league and tournament participants. The dual-course setup allows the facility to accommodate high traffic volumes while offering variety for regular visitors. Its location within the Garland park system makes it a representative example of Texas municipal golf from the 1980s development era.
