VILA SOL SPA & GOLF RESORT
🇵🇹 Vilamoura, Algarve, PT
Designed by Donald Steel
Vila Sol Spa & Golf Resort sits in the heart of the Algarve's "Golden Triangle," a few kilometers inland from Vilamoura's coastal developments. Designed by Donald Steel and opened in the early 1990s, the course occupies gently rolling terrain planted with umbrella pines, cork oaks, and citrus groves that give it a distinctly Mediterranean character. Steel routed the layout to take advantage of the natural elevation changes and incorporated several water features that come into play on both nines.
The course is divided into two returning loops. The front nine moves through relatively open terrain with wider fairways, while the back nine tightens considerably and introduces more strategic demands off the tee. Water hazards appear on multiple holes, most notably on the par-three 15th, where the green sits on a peninsula. The par-five 18th returns to the clubhouse with a lake guarding the left side of the approach, creating a risk-reward finish for those attempting to reach in two.
Vila Sol has hosted various regional and national amateur events over the years and serves as a year-round facility thanks to the Algarve's mild winter climate. The resort attracts a mix of international visitors and local members, with the course offering a more parkland-style experience compared to some of the region's links-inspired designs along the coast. The property includes extensive practice facilities and has been part of the broader development of golf tourism in the Vilamoura area since the 1990s.
