CHALK MOUNTAIN GOLF COURSE
🇺🇸 Atascadero, CA, USA
Designed by Robert Muir Graves

Chalk Mountain Golf Course sits in the rolling hills east of Atascadero in California's Central Coast region, designed by Robert Muir Graves and opened in the 1970s. Graves, a prolific California architect known for his work throughout the state during the mid-to-late twentieth century, routed the course across terrain that reflects the area's characteristic oak-studded landscape and chalky soil conditions that give the facility its name. The layout takes advantage of natural elevation changes and the region's Mediterranean climate, with fairways that move through valleys and over ridges typical of San Luis Obispo County's inland topography.
The course serves primarily as a public facility, offering golf to residents of the North County area and travelers along the Highway 101 corridor between the Bay Area and Southern California. The design reflects Graves's practical approach to golf architecture, emphasizing playability for a range of skill levels while incorporating the natural features of the site. The property's setting provides views of the surrounding hills and distant peaks, and the routing works with rather than against the existing landforms.
Chalk Mountain operates as a straightforward daily-fee course, part of the region's collection of accessible public golf options. The facility includes standard practice areas and a clubhouse that serves golfers without extensive amenities. It represents the type of community course Graves designed throughout California during an era of golf expansion in the state.
Reviews
Mountain in the name is a bit deceiving but definitely a little hilly. Fun course, couple of interesting holes and others were a little bit too straight from the tee box for my liking. Dogs at the turn were split in half before they grilled them, something I hadn’t seen before.
