GOLF DU CHÂTEAU DE TAULANE
🇫🇷 La Martre, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, FR
Designed by Gary Player
Golf du Château de Taulane occupies a distinctive setting in the Var backcountry of Provence, approximately 50 kilometers inland from the Côte d'Azur. Designed by Gary Player and opened in the early 1990s, the course sits at roughly 900 meters elevation in a landscape that blends alpine and Mediterranean characteristics. The property centers on an 18th-century château, and the routing takes advantage of natural terrain features including valleys, ridgelines, and stands of pine and oak that define the upper Provençal countryside.
The layout reflects Player's approach to working with dramatic topography, incorporating significant elevation changes and strategic bunkering throughout the 18 holes. Several holes play across or along valleys, while others occupy higher ground with views extending toward the pre-Alps. The design asks players to manage both the vertical dimension and the wind patterns common to this elevated inland setting. Water features appear on select holes, and the conditioning benefits from the region's climate, though summer heat and occasional mistral winds influence play.
The club maintains a resort character, with accommodations and dining available on the property. The château itself serves as a focal point for the facility. Taulane represents one of the more remote golf destinations in southeastern France, drawing visitors who combine golf with exploration of the Verdon region and surrounding Provençal villages. The course remains less internationally known than coastal layouts but offers a contrast to seaside golf in the area.
