CAPITAL HILLS AT ALBANY
🇺🇸 Albany, NY, USA
Designed by Devereux Emmet

Capital Hills at Albany occupies a notable place in the region's golf history as a design by Devereux Emmet, the prolific Golden Age architect whose work spans the Northeast. Emmet, active primarily in the 1910s and 1920s, created courses throughout New York, New Jersey, and New England, bringing a strategic sensibility shaped by his observations of British links golf and his collaborations with other prominent designers of the era. His layouts typically emphasize thoughtful bunkering, natural terrain features, and holes that reward precision over pure distance.
The course sits in the Albany area, where the terrain generally features rolling topography characteristic of upstate New York's Hudson Valley region. Emmet's designs from this period often worked with existing land contours rather than imposing dramatic earthmoving, creating routing that follows natural ridgelines and valleys. The setting provides a parkland character with mature tree growth framing fairways and defining playing corridors.
As with many Emmet courses that have survived into the modern era, Capital Hills represents a connection to early American golf architecture, a period when designers were establishing principles that would influence the game's development throughout the twentieth century. The layout reflects the strategic thinking of its time, when architects prioritized angles of approach, green contours, and hazard placement that created multiple routes of play depending on skill level and risk tolerance.
Reviews
Not a must play but worth the price. Difficult holes with pretty views. Well maintained tee boxes and fairways, bunkers are a problem. Would recommend if in the area and want to play
