CAPE KIDNAPPERS GOLF CLUB
🇳🇿 Hastings, Hawke's Bay, NZ
Designed by Tom Doak

Cape Kidnappers, clinging to the cliffs above Hawke's Bay, is New Zealand golf rendered in epic scale. Its drama is as much geological as it is strategic. Tom Doak, known for his minimalist touch, found a canvas here unlike any other; carving fairways into a landscape sculpted by centuries of wind and wave. The result, opened in 2004, is an experience that borders on the surreal.
The course favors the bold. Tee shots demand commitment over yawning ravines, while approaches must contend with winds that can shift on a whim. While the fairways are reasonably wide, the fescue rough is penal and the greens are treacherous. Players who can flight the ball low and work it into the wind will find an advantage on this exposed peninsula, where a double bogey is always lurking just beyond the frame.
Beyond the golf, Cape Kidnappers offers a glimpse into New Zealand's agricultural heartland. The sheep farms that surround the course are a reminder of the region's deep connection to the land. And while not necessarily known for a particular dish, the club's emphasis on locally sourced ingredients offers a fitting culinary complement to its stunning natural setting. The overall experience is as unique as the landscape itself, though not one for the faint of heart.
Reviews
An absolute must-play if you love golf. The scenery is unbelievable. The holes are challenging and interesting. Disappointed in the quality of the course but probably difficult to maintain in that area. Don’t miss this one though.
