SUPERIOR NATIONAL GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Lutsen, MN, USA
Designed by Joel Goldstrand
The Canyon course at Superior National Golf Club occupies dramatic terrain along the North Shore of Lake Superior near Lutsen, Minnesota. Designed by Joel Goldstrand and opened in the mid-1990s, the layout takes its name from the deep ravines and elevation changes that define much of the property. The course sits inland from the lake itself, carved through dense northern Minnesota forest with significant vertical movement throughout the round.
Goldstrand routed the course to emphasize the natural topography, with several holes playing across or along steep-sided valleys. The terrain creates forced carries over wooded chasms and approach shots to greens perched on different levels than the fairways. The elevation changes are substantial enough that many holes feature blind or semi-blind shots, and the routing includes considerable uphill and downhill movement. The forest setting provides a sense of isolation on most holes, with corridors cut through stands of birch, aspen, and pine.
Superior National operates as a public facility in a region known primarily for ski resorts and summer tourism along Lake Superior's scenic shoreline. The course serves both destination visitors to the North Shore and regional players. The property's remote location and challenging terrain give it a distinct character among Minnesota public courses, though the dramatic elevation and forced carries can present difficulty for higher-handicap players. The club's facilities cater to the area's seasonal tourism patterns, with peak play during the brief northern Minnesota golf season.
Reviews
Architecture isn’t anything to write home about but the views of Lake Superior are fantastic
The views here are unmatched. The course is a little too penal for my taste and conditions aren’t always great, but it is a blast nonetheless. Make sure you play the river/canyon course. Mountain should have been closed years ago as they don’t maintain it.
