Canyon at RTJ Golf Trail at Cambrian Ridge

The Canyon Course at Cambrian Ridge is one of three 18-hole layouts that comprise this Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail facility in south-central Alabama. Opened in 1993, the course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. with associate Roger Rulewich as part of Alabama's ambitious public golf initiative. The property sits in the gently rolling terrain of Butler County, where the design takes advantage of natural elevation changes and wooded corridors to create a distinctive routing among the facility's three courses.

Jones's design philosophy is evident throughout the Canyon layout, with generous fairways that accommodate players of varying abilities from multiple tee sets, while strategic bunkering and water features demand thoughtful shot placement. The course incorporates the architect's characteristic large, contoured greens that require careful approach work and reading. Elevation shifts throughout the routing provide visual interest and strategic variety, with several holes playing through tree-lined valleys that give the course its name.

Cambrian Ridge, like other Trail facilities, was developed through a state pension fund investment to promote tourism and provide high-quality public golf access. The complex includes extensive practice facilities and has hosted regional amateur competitions over its three decades of operation. The Canyon Course shares the property with the Sherling and Loblolly courses, offering visitors a full Trail experience with 54 holes of Jones design in a single location.
