Canyon at La Paloma Country Club

The Canyon Course at La Paloma Country Club occupies dramatic desert terrain in the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains in northwest Tucson. Jack Nicklaus designed the course in the late 1980s, routing it through natural arroyos and across rolling desert landscape that provides elevation changes uncommon in the region. The layout takes advantage of the property's natural contours, with several holes playing along or across desert washes that define strategy and create visual interest against the mountain backdrop.

Nicklaus incorporated the Sonoran Desert environment throughout the design, with saguaro cacti, palo verde, and native vegetation framing fairways and surrounding greens. The course features the architect's characteristic emphasis on strategic bunkering and large, contoured putting surfaces that reward precise approach play. Water comes into play on several holes, a notable feature in the desert setting. The routing offers variety in hole direction and length, with par threes playing to different compass points and taking advantage of views toward the Catalinas.

La Paloma operates as a resort and residential community, with the Canyon Course serving as one of multiple layouts on the property. The club provides a desert golf experience that balances challenge with playability for resort guests and members. The course has hosted regional amateur competitions and remains a recognized Nicklaus design in the Tucson golf market, which features numerous desert courses from the 1980s and 1990s development era.
