EL CONQUISTADOR COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Tucson, AZ, USA
Designed by Greg Nash, Jeff Hardin

Carved into the high Sonoran Desert of Oro Valley, Canada at El Conquistador Country Club presents a challenging juxtaposition: lush fairways against the stark, saguaro-studded landscape. Opened in the early 1980s, the course doesn't whisper of a bygone Golden Age, but rather shouts a distinctly American design aesthetic. It’s a course where desert washes penalize wayward drives more than strategically placed bunkers, making risk assessment a constant calculation. The layout favors players who can move the ball left to right, deftly navigating doglegs that slice through the dramatic terrain.
Designed by Greg Nash, Canada's enduring appeal lies in its playability for a wide range of skill levels. While it hasn't hosted major championships, its undulating greens and challenging approach shots keep members engaged and returning. The course is considered a solid, locally respected golf experience, attracting a membership that values both competition and the stunning views of the Santa Catalina Mountains.
El Conquistador Country Club has been noted for their close knit membership, a core group of friends who have been playing Canada together for decades. A local rule remains in place, as well, in which saguaro cacti are considered 'immovable obstructions' offering rare, if comical, relief. This nod to the desert ensures golfers embrace and respect the local environment. After a round, the club is known for its relaxed atmosphere and the refreshing prickly pear margarita, a fitting local favorite.
