BUTLER NATIONAL GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Oak Brook, IL, USA
Designed by George Fazio, Tom Fazio
Butler National, carved from the Illinois prairie in Oak Brook, is defined by a singular, unwavering purpose: to challenge the best golfers. Designed in the Golden Age spirit, the course sprawls across gently rolling parkland dotted with mature trees and strategically placed water hazards. It's a course of subtle deception, rewarding strategic play and punishing wayward shots with thick rough and demanding approaches. Not exceptionally long, Butler National favors those who can shape the ball, navigate its doglegs, and master its undulating greens.
George Fazio's original design was later refined by Tom Fazio, his nephew, ensuring the course maintained its demanding character while incorporating modern agronomic practices. From 1974 to 1990, Butler National served as the uncompromising host of the Western Open, where legends like Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson tested their mettle.
While its lack of recent major championships may keep it from the global spotlight, Butler National remains a highly regarded test of golf, fiercely private and deeply respected within the game. Its membership has historically been known for its exclusivity and, at one time, controversial policies. This commitment to unwavering standards has shaped its unique, albeit divisive, identity within the golfing world.
Reviews
One of the most difficult courses in the U.S., will absolutely beat you up. Mend only club as there’s only a few left in the country, must play for sure. Green complex and speed is hard to describe. Great finishing holes.
Without a doubt the most difficult course I have ever played. The only course I believe could host a US open with a week of prep.
Course is stupid hard, but a fun place always in perfect condition.
