BULLS BAY GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Awendaw, SC, USA
Designed by Mike Strantz
Bulls Bay, carved into the lowcountry landscape of Awendaw, South Carolina, demands your attention from the first tee. A testament to Mike Strantz's singular vision, this modern links-style course is known for its daring contours, wildly undulating greens, and ever-present coastal breezes. The layout favors the bold player, rewarding strategic risk-taking while punishing indecision with challenging recovery shots from its native grasses.
Strantz, who left an indelible mark on courses like Caledonia and True Blue, maximized the dramatic potential of this former hunting preserve. The course unfolds across varied terrain, punctuated by subtle elevation changes and panoramic marsh views, forcing golfers to constantly adapt their strategy. Players often remark on the strategic use of natural hazards and the optical illusions created by the course's unique shaping, making club selection a constant puzzle.
While Bulls Bay has yet to host a major professional event, its challenging layout and demanding conditions attract a membership of serious golfers from around the region. The club prides itself on a vibrant, unpretentious atmosphere, where the camaraderie of the game is valued as highly as low scores. Don't be surprised to find members swapping stories around the grill after a round, recounting both triumphs and tribulations on this unforgettable track.
Reviews
Maybe the coolest golf course you’ll ever play in the Lowcountry. Wildly different than anything else within 500 miles and that makes it all that more fun. A great match play course with tons of risk reward. The clubhouse perched up on the hill never gets old when you get a look at it multiple times throughout the day
A tamer Strantz design that is exquisite. Distinctive holes and the most elevation you’ll find in Charleston (the clubhouse is the highest point in Charleston County). Don’t pass the opportunity to play this one.
