BROOME PARK GOLF CLUB
🏴 Barham, Kent, England
Designed by Donald Steel
Broome Park occupies the grounds of a seventeenth-century manor house near the village of Barham in east Kent, roughly midway between Canterbury and Dover. Donald Steel designed the course in the early 1980s, routing eighteen holes through parkland that blends mature woodland with open agricultural land characteristic of the Kent countryside. The manor itself, a Jacobean structure with later additions, serves as the clubhouse and provides a distinctive architectural focal point for the property.
The layout makes use of the estate's natural contours and established tree lines, with several holes playing through avenues of older hardwoods and others crossing more exposed ground. Steel's design incorporates water features on a number of holes, and the routing takes advantage of elevation changes that are modest but sufficient to create variety in stance and perspective. The course measures over 6,600 yards from the back tees and presents a test that balances strategic interest with accessibility for members and visitors of varying abilities.
Broome Park functions as both a members' club and a hotel facility, with the manor house offering accommodation and dining alongside its role as clubhouse. The setting combines the historical character of the estate with the practical demands of a modern golf operation. The course serves a local membership while also attracting visitors drawn to the combination of Steel's design work and the Kent countryside location, positioned within reach of the Channel ports and the cathedral city of Canterbury.
