BRISTOL & CLIFTON GOLF CLUB
🏴 Bristol, Gloucestershire, England
Designed by Peter McEvoy
Bristol & Clifton Golf Club occupies an elevated site on Beggar Bush Lane in the Failand area, roughly five miles southwest of Bristol city center. The course sits on high ground with views across the surrounding Somerset and Gloucestershire countryside. Peter McEvoy, the accomplished amateur golfer and course designer, created the layout in the late 1990s after the club relocated from its previous home at Clifton Down. The move allowed for a purpose-built facility on land better suited to modern championship golf.
The routing takes advantage of the property's natural contours and mature woodland boundaries. McEvoy's design emphasizes strategic shot-making over length, with fairways that reward accuracy and greens that require careful approach play. The course features a mix of elevation changes and doglegs, with several holes playing through corridors of trees and others opening to wider views. Water comes into play on a handful of holes, adding variety to the challenge.
Bristol & Clifton serves as a members' club with a traditional structure, hosting regular club competitions and regional amateur events. The facility includes practice areas and a clubhouse that reflects the club's heritage, which dates back to its founding in the late nineteenth century at its original Clifton Down location. The course provides a parkland experience within reach of Bristol's urban center, combining accessibility with the character of an established private club.
