The course opened in 2000 as a collaboration between architect Tom Clark and Curtis Strange, the two-time U.S. Open champion who grew up in Virginia and has maintained close ties to the state's golf community throughout his career. The design reflects both Clark's regional experience and Strange's competitive sensibility, with an emphasis on strategic shot values and varied hole corridors.

The routing moves through a mix of open and wooded areas characteristic of the Virginia Piedmont transition zone, with elevation changes that create natural amphitheater settings on several holes.
