BRAE BURN COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Houston, TX, USA
Designed by John Bredemus
Brae Burn Country Club, nestled in the heart of Houston, began as an oilman’s haven and evolved into a challenging, tree-lined course where generations have tested their mettle. The original layout, a product of the early 1930s, reflects a classic parkland style with mature oaks and towering pines framing gently rolling fairways. While not a course that has historically garnered national attention, a later redesign by a Texan design group imbued it with subtle complexities that reward strategic play.
Brae Burn presents a fair test, often favoring those who can shape the ball. Its tree-lined corridors demand accuracy, while subtly contoured greens place a premium on precise approach shots. Doglegs abound, requiring careful consideration off the tee, and the occasional blind shot adds to the strategic intrigue.
Beyond the golf, Brae Burn is a club deeply rooted in Houston's social fabric, where the traditions of Texas hospitality meet the competitive spirit of the game. A prominent energy executive, whose identity remains private, once famously aced the difficult par-3 16th, celebrating with the entire foursome at the bar afterward—a story still recounted with fondness among members. While lacking a signature culinary item, the club's member-guest barbecues are legendary, embodying the spirit of camaraderie that defines the Brae Burn experience.
Reviews
The picture of the clubhouse is inaccurate. The current clubhouse is a modern brick design. The course was transformed a few years back by Tripp Davis. The routing is still the same, w some modifications to the shaping of the land. The transformation of he landing areas, added character to the flat flood plain land. All the greens were rebuilt from traditional size and shape, to a more modern look. Bigger and bolder, with brand new grass to allow for greater speeds and locations than before. A wonderful club w great people.
