PENN STATE GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 State College, PA, USA
Designed by Willie Park Jr.
Penn State's Blue Course is where generations of Nittany Lions first tasted competitive golf, a rite of passage as much as a round. Carved into the rolling landscape surrounding Happy Valley, the classic parkland layout, originally designed by Willie Park Jr. in 1921, meanders through mature hardwoods. Subsequent refinements by golf architect, Harrison Minchew, add further teeth by subtly tightening fairways and strategically shaping green complexes. The Blue Course’s difficulty lies in its green complexes, which can make or break a round, especially in the afternoon when the winds pick up from the west.
While not nationally renowned, the Blue Course offers a stern but fair test for both the casual player and the seasoned competitor. Its classic design principles reward thoughtful course management and accurate iron play, rather than brute strength, which is why it hosts the annual Pennsylvania Amateur Championship. It's also the annual home for the Nittany Lion Men's and Women's Golf teams.
The Blue Course's appeal also lies in its accessibility. It's a course where families and students can enjoy the game together, fostering a love of golf that lasts a lifetime. Post-round traditions often include gathering at the clubhouse for a bite, reliving shots, and debating the merits of the day's play with the backdrop of Beaver Stadium towering in the distance.
