BLOOMINGTON COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Bloomington, IL, USA
Designed by Bob Lohmann, Tom Bendelow

Bloomington Country Club traces its design lineage to Tom Bendelow, the prolific Scottish-born architect who shaped hundreds of American courses in the early twentieth century. Bendelow's original routing established the club's fundamental character on gently rolling terrain typical of central Illinois, where modest elevation changes and mature tree corridors define playing corridors. Bob Lohmann later contributed modifications that updated the course while preserving its traditional parkland framework.
The course occupies land characteristic of the Bloomington-Normal area, where agricultural plains meet wooded residential development. Tree-lined fairways and strategic bunkering require thoughtful placement off the tee, and the greens present varied undulation that rewards local knowledge. Water features appear on several holes, adding both visual interest and strategic consequence to approach play.
Bloomington Country Club serves as a private facility for the local community, hosting member competitions and social events throughout the season. The club maintains traditions common to Midwestern country clubs established in the early 1900s, combining golf with dining and family programming. Its location in Bloomington, a college town anchored by Illinois State University and Illinois Wesleyan University, gives the membership a mix of business professionals, academics, and long-established local families.
The course reflects the straightforward design principles of its era—honest golf that emphasizes accuracy and course management over manufactured drama. While it does not claim national tournament history or top-ranking status, it provides a solid test for members familiar with its subtleties and seasonal playing conditions.
Reviews
Really great course. Conditions were very good. Too many trees though. Would love to see some removed. Bunkers amazing shape. Greens so good and all slope back to front. Greens were very challenging overall. Would love to go back and get another shot out there!
