BLACKMOOR GOLF CLUB
🏴 Bordon, Hampshire, England
Designed by Harry S. Colt

Blackmoor Golf Club sits in the heathland country of northeast Hampshire, near the border with Surrey and West Sussex. The course was designed by Harry Colt and opened in 1913, representing one of his earlier works during a period when he was establishing himself as one of Britain's foremost golf architects. The land occupies a gently rolling site with characteristic heathland features: sandy soil, heather, gorse, pine and birch trees, and natural drainage that keeps the course playable throughout much of the year.
The routing makes effective use of the property's natural contours and vegetation. Colt's design philosophy emphasized strategic options and natural hazards rather than artificial difficulty, and Blackmoor reflects this approach with holes that reward thoughtful positioning over pure length. The heather and gorse provide definition and challenge without excessive penal consequences, while the tree-lined corridors create a sense of seclusion. Several holes feature elevated tees or greens that take advantage of the topography.
Blackmoor remains a members' club with a traditional atmosphere typical of English heathland golf. The course measures modest by modern standards but maintains its strategic interest through green complexes and the need for accurate approach play. The heathland setting places it within a notable concentration of similar courses in the broader Hampshire-Surrey-Berkshire region, though Blackmoor operates with less public attention than some of its better-known neighbors. The club has maintained much of Colt's original design intent while adapting to contemporary maintenance practices and playing standards.
Reviews
Blackmoor is a weird one for me. Conditions are sensational. Right up there. And the tree lined holes are amazing and my favourite type of course. I just can’t look past 5 par 4s to start, none amazing friendly either. It feels like a lazy design. I had the pleasure of replaying it a couple of weeks ago and it was so pure. But I found myself frustrated after 6-7 holes as I wanted more and I couldn’t put my finger on it. Being a Par 69 also for me is a mark down. Can’t get onboard with this, just add 2 par 5s and make it a 71 atleast. Fairways and greens are elite, playing a twighlight in summer with the sun coming through the trees honestly it is right up there. For me it doesn’t quite get high 8s as it misses the wow factor Hindhead has and the logo and club house are not up to scratch for me. A grass range is great. I think 8.4 is fair for this.
