BLACK OAK GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Long Valley, NJ, USA
Designed by David Glenz

Black Oak Golf Club sits in the rolling hills of Long Valley in Morris County, New Jersey, part of the state's rural northwestern corridor. Designed by David Glenz and opened in the late 1990s, the course occupies former farmland that transitions into wooded upland terrain characteristic of this section of the Highlands region. The layout takes advantage of natural elevation changes and mature hardwood stands, with black oak trees—native to the area—framing many holes and giving the course its name.
The routing moves through varied topography, with several holes playing along ridgelines that offer views across the surrounding valleys, while others descend into lower ground where seasonal streams and wetland areas come into play. Glenz incorporated the existing land features into a design that emphasizes strategic shot placement over sheer length, with fairway bunkers and greenside complexes that reward accuracy. The greens feature moderate undulation, and the course generally plays firm and fast during summer months given the well-drained soils common to the region.
Black Oak operates as a semi-private facility, welcoming both members and daily-fee play. The club maintains a relaxed atmosphere typical of northern New Jersey golf venues outside the state's more exclusive enclaves. The course serves local golfers and visitors exploring the Morris County golf scene, which includes several other notable layouts within a short drive. Conditioning standards remain consistent with regional expectations for upscale daily-fee courses.
Reviews
Greens are a circus, unplayable at times, pins can be impossible, solid layout but be prepared to hate your score if you get punished on the greens. Which I has happened to me…obviously.
Black Oak is a tough mountain style course. Usually kept in decent shape. Layout is very unique. Targets are pretty small which makes hitting it straight a must. Holes 13-18 are different from the rest of the course and the best stretch.
