BLACK MESA GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Espanola, NM, USA
Designed by Baxter Spann

Black Mesa Golf Club isn't just carved into the high desert of Española, New Mexico; it embodies it, a stark and unforgiving challenge mirroring the region's history. Its setting is raw and honest and unlike any in America.
Designed by Baxter Spann in the early 2000s, Black Mesa isn't interested in manicured perfection, but in a ruggedly beautiful and testing layout. The course favors those who embrace a ground game, where the contours and natural arroyos demand strategic shot-making and creative recovery shots. With very few trees and wide open fairways, golfers are encouraged to grip it and rip it. Black Mesa's greens are known for being undulating and fast, putting a premium on accurate approach shots and precise putting. The course has no signature hole but instead it's a collection of unique and memorable tests, a constant reminder of the desert's dominance.
While Black Mesa isn't on the rota of major championships, it possesses a fervent regional following drawn to its relentless challenge and its commitment to a pure golfing experience. Membership is a badge of honor amongst those who appreciate the game's complexities.
Beyond the golf, Black Mesa is known for its post-round camaraderie, especially around its celebrated green chili cheeseburgers. A staple of the clubhouse menu, these burgers are a fitting reward for conquering a course that respects no one and demands everything.
Reviews
What a special day and a great golf course. Not only is the land remarkable but the design fits into it perfectly. These green complexes reminded me slightly of Mr Ross because of all the small tiers and subtle breaks. The locals I don’t think realize how good this place is. Everyone need to play here if you ever are in New Mexico
