BIRDSFOOT GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Freeport, PA, USA
Designed by Brian Ault, James Cervon
Birdsfoot Golf Club, carved into the rolling hills of Freeport, Pennsylvania, delivers a stern test of golf that belies its unassuming origins. A course that rewards power and precision, especially on the longer holes, and presents a fair test.
Designed in the modern era, Birdsfoot stretches across terrain once more suited for agriculture. Wide fairways give golfers ample room to let it rip off the tee, but strategic bunkering and subtle undulations around the greens demand sharp iron play. This isn't a course of trickery, but rather one that presents its challenges honestly, requiring golfers to execute quality shots. The routing favors a slight fade from the tee, so right-to-left players might be able to put the ball in a fair position.
While Birdsfoot hasn't hosted national championships, it remains a respected and popular local venue. The course’s difficulty is further reinforced by its annual hosting of various local amateur events. Players enjoy the course because of its challenge.
Known for its friendly atmosphere and challenging layout, Birdsfoot provides a solid test and good value for golfers in Western Pennsylvania.
Reviews
A genuinely enjoyable course, “links style” but made Pittsburgh, with hill and climbs and massive undulation. Really great condition, friendly and a hard ass test of golf, even if you weren’t playing like I was that day.
Widely regarded by many as their favorite public track in western PA birdsfoot does a lot of things right. A reasonable greens fee, a great piece of land, and a quaint clubhouse all add to the value of a trip to Birdsfoot. Everything about this place is welcoming and friendly. An afternoon here is like a family dinner at grandmas house. The staff are awesome, the food/beer are great, and I haven’t even gotten to the course yet. With a meandering routing that weaves through the rolling hills Birdsfoot perfectly encapsulates golf in western PA. Elevation changes on nearly every hole Birdsfoot leans into the terrain. The par 3s are varied and a perfect collection for matchplay. The par 5s are gettable while trying to lure you into danger by playing too aggressive. Plenty of short 4s for excitement that are balanced out by some real brutes. The course is fairly exposed and any wind will play a huge role in what shots/clubs are required. Many in the area compare this course to Totteridge and while both share similarities Totter has the edge in conditions, routing, and dramatics. This is by no means a knock on Birdsfoot as blows a lot of the true parkland public tracks in the area out of the water. A good track, a great atmosphere, and a decent price makes Birdsfoot a must play course a few times a year for golfers living in the area.
Apologies to anyone that did not play the course on April 25th, 2026. I do not think it is possible to get as good of pin positions as we got that day. Every green out there was in incredible condition and every pin was placed in a challenging spot that brought three putts into play. The course itself is nothing too fancy but I thought what the architect did with the course given was awesome. Every hole was unique and so much fun. I think I hit all but one club in my bag and my partner said the same. For a public course on a rainy and windy day the course was in incredible condition. I wish more public courses would follow the model that birdsfoot does. It’s nothing flashy and no bells and whistles but they invest their money into the right things. The clubhouse there is also the perfect place to share a drink with your playing partners. Really fun experience and would recommend it to anyone in the area. EDIT* - would love to get back and play when it is firm and fast to really use the slopes. Still sick either way but would like to see it again
