BELLERIVE COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 St. Louis, MO, USA
Designed by Bryce Swanson, Robert Trent Jones Sr.
Bellerive Country Club occupies rolling terrain in the western suburbs of St. Louis, Missouri. Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed the course in 1960, with Bryce Swanson later contributing modifications. The layout reflects Jones's characteristic approach from that era: substantial length, large greens with pronounced contours, strategic bunkering, and water hazards that demand precise shot placement. The property's natural elevation changes provide variety in stance and perspective throughout the round.
The course has hosted multiple major championships, establishing its credentials among American tournament venues. Bellerive held the U.S. Open in 1965, won by Gary Player, and the PGA Championship in 1992 and 2018. Brooks Koepka claimed the 2018 PGA Championship here, the most recent major contested at the club. The course has also hosted senior major championships and numerous regional and national amateur events. Tournament preparations typically involve lengthening the course beyond 7,400 yards and adjusting rough heights and green speeds to championship standards.
The club maintains a traditional private membership structure with facilities that include dining rooms and practice areas befitting a venue of its competitive history. Bellerive's membership has supported the substantial infrastructure required for major championship hosting while preserving the course's role as a daily members' layout. The routing moves through mature tree-lined corridors with several holes featuring water prominently, particularly on the closing stretch where strategic decisions under pressure have determined championship outcomes.
Reviews
When I think Robert Trent Jones, Bellerive immediately comes to mind. Not my favorite architect but it's a challenging golf course in A+ condition that I probably wouldn't choose to play all the time but I'd certainly recommend it to anyone that hasn't had the pleasure. Nice and friendly, good practice facilities.
