Kapalua's Bay Course, etched into the dramatic slopes of West Maui, presents a masterclass in resort golf, offering panoramic Pacific views that often distract from the strategic challenges laid out before you. Built in the mid 1970s, this course is known for its wide fairways and gently sloping greens that often belie the difficulty found with the trade winds. It plays more forgiving than its famed sister course, The Plantation, but demands respect for its coastal exposure and subtle breaks.
Arnold Palmer and Francis Duane crafted a layout that utilizes the natural contours of the land, a characteristic of the era. The course meanders through mature stands of trees and along the coastline. Most notably, the par-3 fifth hole plays dramatically over Oneloa Bay, a constant reminder of the course’s stunning location.
The Bay Course has played host to numerous professional events, including the Kapalua LPGA Classic, showcasing the talents of women professionals amidst the stunning Hawaiian landscape. While not as globally recognized as some of its championship peers, the course continues to serve as a delightful and memorable experience for resort guests seeking a blend of playability and scenic beauty. This ease of approach, allows players the time to grab the infamous "Bay Burger" at the turn.
Reviews
plantation's sister is a must play at least once. it doesn't quite have the dramatic jaw dropping views of the crown jewel itself but it's a fun and more approachable track nonetheless with some beautiful scenery at half the price. if you can, start here for a warm up before playing Big Kap.
