GOLF DE BARBAROUX
🇫🇷 Brignoles, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, FR
Designed by Pete Dye
Golf de Barbaroux sits in the hills above Brignoles in the Var department of Provence, roughly an hour's drive inland from the Mediterranean coast. Pete Dye designed the course in the early 1990s, bringing his distinctive architectural style to the southern French landscape. The property occupies rolling terrain covered with native Mediterranean vegetation—umbrella pines, cork oaks, and scrubland typical of the Provençal backcountry—and the routing takes advantage of natural elevation changes and rocky outcroppings.
Dye's design here incorporates many of his signature elements: railroad ties framing bunkers and water hazards, strategic bunkering that demands precise shot placement, and greens with bold contours. The course stretches across varied topography, with several holes playing through wooded corridors while others open to views across the surrounding hills and valleys. Water comes into play on multiple holes, and the layout requires thoughtful course management rather than simply overpowering the design.
The club operates as a resort facility with accommodations on site, serving both members and visiting golfers. Barbaroux has hosted professional events on the European developmental tours and remains one of the more recognized championship-length courses in the Provence region. The combination of Dye's architectural approach and the distinctive Provençal setting gives the course a character that stands apart from more traditional French parkland designs.
