Barbados Golf Club

The Barbados Golf Club in Durants operates the island's only public-access 18-hole championship golf course. Designed by Ron Kirby and opened in 1974, the course occupies relatively flat terrain characteristic of Barbados's coral limestone foundation in the southern parish of Christ Church. The layout plays across former sugar cane fields and incorporates the island's prevailing easterly trade winds as a consistent design element that affects club selection and strategy throughout the round. The course measures approximately 6,800 yards from the championship tees and features narrow fairways bordered by tropical vegetation including mahogany trees, casuarinas, and coconut palms. Water hazards appear on several holes, and the coral-based soil provides firm playing conditions year-round. The routing includes holes that play both with and against the trade winds, creating variety in how the course presents itself on different days. The relatively modest elevation changes mean visibility is generally good, though strategic bunkering and the wind factor require thoughtful course management. As Barbados's primary facility for both visitors and local golfers, the club serves a broad membership base and welcomes international play. The course has hosted regional amateur competitions and remains the center of organized golf on the island. The clubhouse offers views across the layout and provides dining in a relaxed Caribbean atmosphere, reflecting the island's blend of British colonial golf traditions and West Indian hospitality.
