AVALON LAKES GOLF COURSE
🇺🇸 Warren, OH, USA
Designed by Pete Dye
Avalon Lakes stands as a testament to Ohio golf, a public course woven into the fabric of the American Way in Howland Township, where accessible golf meets enduring appeal. Its greens have borne witness to countless weekend rounds and the dreams of aspiring players.
Crafted in a modern style, Avalon Lakes presents a parkland layout characterized by gently rolling terrain. Water hazards meander throughout, and strategically placed bunkers guard undulating greens. Wide fairways offer a forgiving tee shot but reward strategic play into the green, while subtle doglegs and challenging pin positions test a player's course management. The course doesn't command national attention but offers a challenging yet playable experience for golfers of all skill levels.
Avalon Lakes is known as a family oriented club with golf at it's core. It's also widely known for its Friday Fish Fry, a community favorite for 20+ years and a great way to finish a round or kick off the weekend with the family.
Reviews
As a Pete Dye lover I had reservations about this course knowing how flat the Ohio land is and how poor the public golf scene is in general there. Those reservations were quickly dispelled after very few holes as I realized this really is a true DYE experience. The land may be flat but Pete has many defenses setup throughout the routing. Theres of course his classic bunkering which looks unmissable from the tee but in reality has room all around to play to. There’s the fast and subtle green complexes compete with some of the best collections areas I’ve seen for a non links course. And finally there’s the incredibly narrow fairways that pop up throughout the round. At times it feels like you have 10 yards to land a tee shot and when the fairways do open up there always seems to be water prominent off of one side of the fairways. The course is a very stern test of golf especially if any wind comes into play. This being said it rarely feels unfair. While it’s difficult to navigate on the first loop repeat play is rewarded by understanding the proper routes to make par and more importantly the proper places to miss. Dye makes sure you think on every shot, especially tee shots, which is incredibly rare for courses in this state in my experience. Every club will be utilized and birdies are incredibly rewarding. The practice facilities are excellent and the post round drinks setup is exceptional whether indoors or out. While the price tag of $~150 in peak season is a little high the club is semi private and does its best to resemble a resort setup. They have a gem of a routing on their hands and I highly recommend a round here. Don’t be afraid to bail on number 8…
