ASTORIA GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Warrenton, OR, USA
Designed by George Junor

Astoria Golf & Country Club sits on the northern Oregon coast near Warrenton, a few miles from the mouth of the Columbia River where it meets the Pacific Ocean. Designed by George Junor and opened in the 1920s, the course occupies rolling terrain characteristic of the coastal landscape, with the routing shaped by the natural contours and prevailing winds that sweep in from the ocean. Junor, a Pacific Northwest architect active in the early twentieth century, worked primarily in Oregon and Washington, creating courses that responded to the region's varied topography and climate.
The layout reflects the modest scale and straightforward design principles common to courses of its era, with holes that move through stands of coastal pines and across open ground. The setting offers views toward the Columbia River estuary and the surrounding coastal hills, and the course experiences the changeable weather typical of the region—fog, wind, and rain are frequent companions to play. The club serves as a community gathering place for the Warrenton area, maintaining a traditional small-town golf club atmosphere.
Astoria Golf & Country Club represents a piece of early golf history on the Oregon coast, where courses were often built to serve local populations rather than destination players. The design has likely evolved over the decades through routine maintenance and modest updates, but it retains the character of a regional layout shaped by its coastal environment and the practical design approach of its time.
Reviews
Quirky old school course. Not very long and some very tight driving holes between the dunes. This course has a cult following but won’t appeal to everyone which might account for some of the low ratings on here. Definitely worth a play if in the area.
