Aroeira II at Aroeira Golf Club

Aroeira II is the second of two championship courses at Aroeira Golf Club, located approximately 25 kilometers south of Lisbon in the coastal pine forests of the Setúbal Peninsula. Designed by British architect Donald Steel and opened in the mid-1990s, the course complements the club's original layout (Aroeira I, designed by Frank Pennink) and reflects Steel's characteristic approach to routing golf through natural terrain with minimal earth-moving. The property sits within a protected landscape of umbrella pines and cork oaks, typical of the Portuguese Atlantic coast.

The layout moves through dense woodland corridors, with fairways carved between mature trees that demand accuracy from the tee. Steel's design emphasizes strategic positioning over length, requiring players to navigate doglegs and avoid the pine trunks that frame most holes. The sandy, free-draining soil provides firm conditions year-round, and the course plays particularly well during Portugal's mild winters when many northern European courses close. Elevation changes are modest but sufficient to create variety in stance and approach angles.

Aroeira Golf Club serves both members and visitors, functioning as a residential golf community with international membership drawn partly from Lisbon's expatriate population. The facility has hosted Portuguese national championships and European Tour qualifying events, benefiting from its proximity to the capital and reliable playing conditions.
