ARKLOW GOLF LINKS
🇮🇪 Arklow, Wicklow, IE
Designed by Connaughton, F.G. Hawtree, Hackett, Taylor
Arklow Golf Links occupies a stretch of linksland along the Irish Sea coast in County Wicklow, approximately fifty miles south of Dublin. The course has evolved through the contributions of several architects over its history. F.G. Hawtree provided early design work, while subsequent modifications came from Taylor, Eddie Hackett, and Pat Ruddy's associate Mel Flanagan working under the Connaughton name. This layered design history reflects the club's ongoing efforts to refine the routing and make full use of the natural duneland terrain.
The layout runs through classic linksland topography, with holes routed among sandhills and native grasses characteristic of Ireland's east coast. The property features elevation changes and natural contours that create variety in stance and shot requirements. Prevailing winds from the sea add a strategic dimension, particularly on holes that play parallel to the coastline. The course presents traditional links challenges: firm turf, pot bunkers, and greens that reward ground game approaches.
Arklow serves as a members' club with a welcoming reputation for visitors exploring the Wicklow coast. The setting offers views across the Irish Sea and the surrounding countryside, with the Wicklow Mountains visible inland. The club maintains a straightforward, unpretentious atmosphere typical of Irish seaside golf venues. While not among Ireland's championship links, Arklow provides an authentic links experience in a region better known for its parkland courses and dramatic coastal scenery.
