ARABELLA COUNTRY ESTATE
🇿🇦 Kleinmond, Western Cape, ZA
Designed by Peter Matkovich

Arabella occupies a dramatic coastal site in Kleinmond, roughly 90 kilometers east of Cape Town along the Western Cape's Whale Coast. Designed by Peter Matkovich and opened in 1999, the course sits on a narrow peninsula between the Bot River Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean, with the Kogelberg Mountains forming a backdrop to the north. This unusual setting places golf holes directly along tidal wetlands and shoreline, creating a links-like environment uncommon in South Africa. The routing takes full advantage of the water on multiple sides, with several holes playing along or across lagoon edges where wind is a constant factor.
The layout measures over 6,400 meters from the championship tees and features water in play on more than half the holes. The par-three 11th is particularly exposed, playing across an inlet of the lagoon with little margin for error. The closing stretch returns toward the clubhouse along the water, where prevailing southeasterly winds typically strengthen in the afternoon. The course has hosted professional events on South African tours and remains one of the more photographed layouts in the country due to its coastal scenery and proximity to seasonal whale migration routes.
Arabella is part of a residential estate development that includes a hotel and spa. The property attracts both destination golfers visiting the Cape region and members from nearby towns. The course conditions and maintenance standards reflect its resort positioning, and the setting offers views that extend across the lagoon to mountain ranges inland.
