Am Sachsenwald occupies forested terrain in Dassendorf, approximately 25 kilometers southeast of Hamburg in the Schleswig-Holstein region of northern Germany. The course takes its name from the Sachsenwald, one of the largest contiguous forests in the region, which provides the dominant character of the property. Designer Karl F. Grohs routed the layout through mature woodland, creating a parkland setting where tree-lined corridors and natural elevation changes define the playing experience.

The design reflects the central European parkland tradition common to German courses developed in the latter decades of the twentieth century, with holes carved through dense stands of oak, beech, and pine. The forest creates both strategic and aesthetic definition, narrowing landing areas and framing approach shots while providing shelter from wind. Elevation shifts within the property add variety to the routing, though the terrain remains fundamentally playable rather than severe.
