ALTOZANO GOLF CLUB
🇲🇽 Morelia, Michoacan, MX
Designed by Carter Morrish, Jay Morrish
Altozano occupies rolling terrain in the highlands near Morelia, the colonial capital of Michoacán in central Mexico. Jay Morrish, working with his son Carter Morrish, designed the course to take advantage of the property's natural elevation changes and views across the surrounding landscape. The Morrish partnership, known for work throughout the American Southwest and Mexico, brought their experience with dramatic topography to this site at roughly 6,000 feet above sea level.
The routing moves through varied terrain that includes oak woodlands and open meadows characteristic of the region's temperate climate. Elevation shifts create strategic interest throughout the round, with approach shots often played to greens positioned on different levels than the fairways. The design emphasizes shot values over length, asking players to manage the ball in the thinner air of the altitude while navigating the property's natural contours.
Altozano serves as the centerpiece of a residential community outside Morelia, a city recognized for its Spanish colonial architecture and cultural heritage. The club provides a private setting for members and their guests, with facilities that reflect the region's architectural traditions. The course represents one of the more significant modern golf developments in Michoacán, a state better known historically for agriculture and manufacturing than for golf tourism.
