Afandou Golf Course of Rhodes occupies a distinctive position as Greece's only 18-hole golf course, situated on the eastern coast of Rhodes near the village of Afandou. Swiss architect Donald Harradine designed the layout in the late 1960s, opening in 1973. Harradine, who worked extensively across continental Europe during the mid-20th century, created a course that reflects both the Mediterranean landscape and the practical constraints of building on an Aegean island with limited water resources and challenging terrain.

The routing moves through rolling, rocky ground characterized by native vegetation including pines, olive trees, and Mediterranean scrub. The course sits roughly two kilometers inland from the Aegean Sea, with the terrain offering elevation changes and views toward the coastline and surrounding hills. The design incorporates the natural contours and existing vegetation, with fairways that often require strategic positioning given the uneven lies and the presence of trees that frame many holes. Water comes into play sparingly, reflecting the island's climate and the original design philosophy.

As the sole regulation golf facility in Greece for decades, Afandou has served both the local Rhodes community and visiting golfers exploring the Dodecanese islands. The course operates within a relatively modest infrastructure compared to resort developments elsewhere in the Mediterranean, maintaining its character as a straightforward test of golf shaped by its island setting and the practical realities of maintaining turf in a hot, dry climate with seasonal tourism patterns.
