PINEHURST RESORT & COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Pinehurst, NC, USA
Designed by Gus Grantham, Jack Nicklaus
Pinehurst No. 9 opened in 1976 as a Jack Nicklaus design with routing assistance from Gus Grantham, adding to the resort's already substantial collection of courses. The layout occupies gently rolling terrain characteristic of the North Carolina Sandhills, with corridors carved through mature longleaf pines and wiregrass understory. The design reflects Nicklaus's mid-1970s approach, featuring strategic bunkering, elevated greens, and water hazards that require thoughtful club selection and course management.
The routing moves through varied terrain with several elevation changes that provide visual interest and strategic options from the tee. Water comes into play on multiple holes, a departure from the more traditional ground-game emphasis found on Pinehurst's earlier Donald Ross designs. The green complexes typically feature modest undulation and are protected by deep bunkers, rewarding accurate approach shots while penalizing misses.
As part of the Pinehurst Resort, No. 9 serves primarily as a guest course and receives less attention than the property's more celebrated layouts, particularly No. 2 and No. 4. The course provides a contrast in design philosophy to the resort's Ross courses, offering a more modern target-golf experience. It remains a solid complement to the resort's diverse collection, giving visitors exposure to championship-era Nicklaus design within the historic Pinehurst setting.
Reviews
Played tournament here a while back before it was part of the Pinehurst family (formerly National Golf Club). Layout is fun but OB lucks unbelievably close to the field of play. We played it as lateral drop for our tournament.
