Willie Fernie

Willie Fernie was a Scottish professional golfer and golf course architect from St Andrews, born in 1855. He won the 1883 Open Championship at Musselburgh Links, defeating defending champion Bob Ferguson in a playoff by a single stroke after both men tied at 158 over four rounds.

Following his competitive career, Fernie transitioned to course design and left a substantial architectural legacy across Scotland and beyond. His portfolio includes work at Royal Troon's Portland course, Southerndown in Wales, and the Championship and River courses at Aldeburgh in Suffolk. In Scotland, his designs span from Dumfries and Galloway (Colvend, Gatehouse, Sanquhar, Thornhill) through central Scotland (Callander, Craigie Hill in Perth, Pitlochry) to the greater Glasgow area, where he shaped courses at Caldwell, Drumpellier, Erskine, Ralston, and Whitecraigs. His reach extended to English layouts including Seacroft in Lincolnshire and Whitsand Bay in Cornwall, demonstrating the breadth of his practice during the formative years of golf architecture.

Fernie died in 1924, having established himself as both an Open champion and a prolific designer whose courses remain in play across Britain.
