Willie Dunn Jr.

Willie Dunn Jr. was an English professional golfer and course designer of Scottish descent, born around 1864 in Blackheath, London. He competed at the highest level of early American golf, finishing second in the 1895 U.S. Open and earning $100 from the purse. His legacy, however, rests primarily on his pioneering design work during the formative years of American golf course architecture.

Dunn's most celebrated designs include Shinnecock Hills Golf Club and The Apawamis Club, both completed in the 1890s when golf was just taking root in the United States. Shinnecock Hills in particular is often named among the most admired courses in the world and remains a testament to his vision for strategic, links-inspired golf on American soil. His portfolio also encompasses Ardsley Country Club, Elmira Country Club, and several other layouts that helped establish golf in the Northeast and beyond.

As both player and architect, Dunn bridged the Scottish golfing tradition and the emerging American game, leaving an indelible mark on the sport's development in the United States.
