William Harries was a prolific golf course architect whose work concentrated primarily in upstate New York during the mid-20th century. His portfolio demonstrates a focus on accessible municipal and public golf facilities, with designs spanning from the Buffalo-Niagara region to the Finger Lakes and Capital District.
Among his best-regarded layouts is Normanside in Delmar, which remains a respected test of golf near Albany. In the Buffalo area, Harries designed both Sheridan Park and Brighton Park in Tonawanda, along with Beaver Island State Park on Grand Island. His municipal work extended to the Red 9 and White 9 courses at Hyde Park in Niagara Falls. Other notable designs include Byrncliff in Varysburg, Elma Meadows, and the Audubon course at Amherst Audubon Golf Club.
Harries's layouts typically emphasized playability for everyday golfers while incorporating the natural terrain of western and central New York. His courses served important recreational roles in their communities, many remaining in operation today as testament to their enduring design principles.
