William Flynn

William Stephen Flynn (1890–1944) was a leading golf course architect of the early 20th century and a central figure in the "Philadelphia School" of design. Working alongside contemporaries such as A.W. Tillinghast, George C. Thomas Jr., and Hugh Wilson, Flynn helped shape an approach to American course architecture that emphasized strategic variety and natural terrain. His portfolio includes celebrated layouts such as Shinnecock Hills on Long Island, Cherry Hills Country Club, and significant contributions to Merion Golf Club.

Among Flynn's designs represented in Course Vaults are Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and several other Pennsylvania courses including Concord Country Club, Bala Golf Club, and The Country Club in Ohio. His work is recognized for blending thoughtful routing with player challenge across a range of sites.

Flynn's influence extended well beyond his relatively brief career, which ended with his death in 1944. The Philadelphia School collectively produced over 300 courses, many of which remain benchmarks of American golf architecture.
