William B. Langford (1887–1977) was a prolific golf course architect and civil engineer who made his mark during the golden age of golf course design between the World Wars. A graduate of both Yale and Columbia, Langford produced over 200 courses, predominantly across the Midwest, working often in partnership with Theodore Moreau. His design style echoed the strategic template-hole approach associated with Charles Blair Macdonald, Seth Raynor, and Charles Banks.
Among his most celebrated work are Lawsonia in Green Lake, Wisconsin, Wakonda in Des Moines, Iowa, and Minnehaha Country Club in Sioux Falls, South Dakota—the latter added as a PGA Champions Tour venue in 2018. Other notable designs include Harrison Hills in Indiana, Ozaukee in Wisconsin, and Happy Hollow in Omaha. In the Kansas City area, his work at Milburn Country Club in Overland Park helped establish his reputation in the region—an area he returned to later for the Brookridge courses, also in Overland Park.
Langford passed away in Sarasota, Florida in 1977, leaving behind a significant midwestern portfolio that remains admired by routing enthusiasts and classic-design advocates.
