Willard Byrd was a prolific Southern golf course architect whose career spanned several decades, primarily across the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida. Working predominantly from the mid-20th century onward, Byrd established a reputation for designing accessible, member-friendly layouts that emphasized strategic variety and playability across diverse terrain. His portfolio reflects the growth of country club and resort golf throughout the Southeast during the latter half of the 20th century.
Among Byrd's most recognized works are the Dogwood Course at Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst and Atlanta Country Club in Marietta, Georgia. He designed both the Dogwood and Cardinal courses at CCNC, contributing significantly to that club's standing in the region. Other notable designs include Gates Four Golf & Country Club in Fayetteville, Dunwoody Country Club near Atlanta, and the Harborside courses at Longboat Key Club in Florida. His extensive work along the Carolina coast includes Wexford Golf Club on Hilton Head Island and multiple layouts in the Myrtle Beach area.
