Vernon Macan

Arthur Vernon Macan Jr. (1882–1964) was an Irish-born architect who shaped golf in the Pacific Northwest during the early to mid-twentieth century. Trained as a lawyer, Macan emigrated to Canada and built a prolific design practice concentrated in British Columbia and the broader Northwest. An accomplished amateur competitor—he won the Pacific Northwest Amateur in 1913—his playing experience informed layouts known for strategic subtlety and respect for natural terrain.

Macan's portfolio includes Victoria and Royal Colwood in Victoria, Gorge Vale and Marine Drive on the British Columbia coast, Gleneagles in West Vancouver, and Kelowna and Penticton in the Okanagan. In the United States he designed the Macan course at Columbia Edgewater Country Club in Portland, Fircrest near Tacoma, Inglewood and Sunland in Washington state, Manito in Spokane, and Contra Costa in California's East Bay. His designs are characterized by thoughtful bunkering, routing adapted to rolling or forested sites, and enduring playability.

Though less widely known today than Golden Age contemporaries, Macan's courses remain central to golf culture in the Northwest, several maintaining high standing within regional club circles.
