Tom Winton

Tom Winton designed a compact but notable portfolio of golf courses concentrated in the northeastern United States during the early-to-mid twentieth century. His work focused primarily on accessible public and municipal layouts in the New York metropolitan area and southern New England, as well as private clubs in upstate New York and Kentucky.

Among his credited designs, Big Spring Country Club in Louisville, Kentucky stands out as his highest-regarded layout. Closer to his base of operations, Winton created a cluster of municipal courses for Westchester County, New York, including Mohansic in Yorktown Heights, Maple Moor in White Plains, and Sprain Lake in Yonkers. He also designed Mount Kisco Country Club and Corning Country Club in New York, along with Mill River Country Club in Stratford, Connecticut.

Winton's courses reflect the era's emphasis on practical, playable design for a growing base of golfers, particularly in public settings. His regional focus and consistent output in the New York suburbs helped expand golf access during a formative period for the game in America.
