Thomas Bendelow

Thomas Bendelow, known as "The Johnny Appleseed of American Golf," was a Scottish American architect who shaped the early landscape of golf course design in the United States. Working during the first half of the twentieth century, Bendelow is credited with designing approximately 600 courses over a 35-year career—an extraordinarily prolific output that helped establish golf infrastructure across America. Six of his designs have received historic designation by the National Park Service for their significance to the sport's development.

His work included courses such as Jefferson Park Golf Club in Seattle and Western Hills Country Club in Cincinnati, along with Anderson Country Club and Fort Mitchell Country Club. While many of Bendelow's layouts were later revised by subsequent architects—reflecting golf's evolution and changing tastes—his influence as a pioneering figure who democratized access to course design during golf's formative era in America remains noteworthy. He earned the additional nickname "The Dean of American Golf" for his contributions to the game's growth.
