Peter Alliss

Peter Alliss (1931–2020) was an accomplished English professional golfer who later became renowned as the BBC's "Voice of Golf" and an active course designer. Between 1952 and 1969, he won 20 professional tournaments, including three British PGA Championships. He represented Great Britain in eight Ryder Cups and, alongside his father Percy, became the first father-son duo to both play in and win the event. After retiring from competitive play, Alliss transitioned to broadcasting and course architecture, where he applied his deep understanding of strategic golf design.

His design portfolio includes work across Britain and Europe, with courses such as the Championship layout at Nottinghamshire Golf and Country Club and Old Thorns in Hampshire among his better-known projects. Other designs include Pyrford Lakes, the Manor House at Castle Combe, and layouts in France including Cannes Mougins and Golf International Barrière La Baule. Alliss often partnered with other architects and brought a player's perspective to his routing and hole concepts, creating accessible yet engaging courses suited to a wide range of abilities.

He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2012 for Lifetime Achievement, recognizing his multifaceted contributions to the game.
