Lester George

Lester George is a Virginia-based golf course architect born in 1955 in Wiesbaden, Germany, while his father was stationed there with the U.S. Air Force. After graduating from the University of Richmond in 1977, George served as an artillery officer in the Army and later completed a master's degree from the United States Army Command and General Staff College, retiring as a lieutenant colonel in 2003. He founded George Golf Design, Inc. in 1991 after studying with other architects at Golf Services International and attending Harvard Design School's golf architecture program.

George has developed a reputation for sensitive restoration and renovation work on classic courses designed by MacDonald, Raynor, Tillinghast, Ross, Flynn, Tull, and Wilson. His portfolio includes Kinloch Golf Club in Manakin-Sabot, Virginia—widely recognized as a standout modern private course—as well as both the Du Pont and Nemours courses at DuPont Country Club in Wilmington, Delaware. He has also demonstrated versatility in new construction, notably converting abandoned landfills into playable golf courses and overcoming significant challenges such as unexploded ordnance discovered during the Raptor course renovation at Langley Air Force Base. George is a member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects.
