Herbert H. Barker

Herbert Haydn Barker (1883–1924) was an English professional golfer and golf course architect active in the early twentieth century. As a tournament player, he competed in multiple U.S. Opens, recording top-ten finishes in both 1909 and 1911. Following his playing career, Barker turned his attention to course design, working primarily in the northeastern United States during the 1910s and early 1920s.

His architectural portfolio includes Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, Maryland, and Arcola Country Club in Paramus, New Jersey—both courses that reflect the strategic design principles of the period. Raritan Valley Country Club in Bridgewater, New Jersey, also bears his imprint. Barker's career was cut short by his death in 1924 at a relatively young age, limiting the full scope of his design legacy.

Though less widely remembered today than some of his contemporaries, Barker's work represents an important thread in early American golf course architecture, particularly in the Mid-Atlantic region where his courses continue to serve their memberships.
